Almost thirty years ago, the Norfolk Island Trees Act 1997 was established with a clear mission to safeguard the island's natural environment and beauty by identifying and protecting specific tree species vital to the island's ecosystem.
A list of 36 protected tree species was developed, with 18 of them being endemic to Norfolk Island. Of these, five are classified as critically endangered, five as endangered, and eight as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
There are instances where the taking of a tree is allowed, and you can find out more by contacting Customer Care on phone +6723 22244 or local freecall 0100 or emailing customercare@nirc.gov.nf.Check the protected tree species list here:https://www.nirc.gov.au/.../1543/list-of-protected-trees Grab the application form to take a protected tree here:https://www.nirc.gov.au/.../application-for-permit-to...
