Mapping Norfolk Island – lecture and new exhibit

29 June 2023

Visitors and locals are invited to enjoy a free presentation on “Using historical maps to reconstruct historical land use and vegetation changes on Norfolk Island and beyond”, hosted by the Norfolk Island Historical Society on Friday, 7 July at 5.30pm, Christian’s Cave.

Professor Salit Kark (University of Queensland, Head of the Biodiversity Research) has interests in conservation science, ecology and biodiversity. She will present on the work led on Norfolk Island by the University of Queensland and Parks Australia in relation to changes in land cover and the recent co-authored paper ‘Historical Maps to Remote Sensing: Reconstructing Land Use Changes on Norfolk Island over the Past 250 Years’ in the Cartographic Journal.

Professor Noam Levin (University of Queensland, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) is Head of Remote Sensing Lab in the Department of Geography. His work combines fieldwork, remote sensing of satellite images, spatial analysis of GIS layers, historical maps, statistical analysis and modelling. Professor Noam’s talk will cover the collation and analysis of historical and vegetation maps of Norfolk Island to reconstruct land cover and changes on the island over the past two centuries.

Also joining this talk is Professor Ruth Kark (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), renowned Emeritus Professor specialising in historical geography of the Holy Land in the past 200 years. She will discuss land use, land ownership and the role of museums in historical geographic research.
