While Norfolk Island has received some rainfall this week, the drought response level remains at HIGH, with some water carters unable to meet demand from their own sources.
Over 100,000 litres of water have been distributed to the community from the desalination system this week.
Production levels at the desal plant are being closely monitored to ensure the continued supply of water in the coming weeks. Water from some of Council’s additional storage facilities is also being utilised to make sure emergency services remain well-resourced.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) reports that Norfolk Island has recorded a total of 24.8 mm of rain this month, with 21.4mm of that falling on Wednesday and Thursday. This rainfall has provided a small reprieve for the community by topping up water tanks and giving our gardens a drink, however it is not enough to trigger dropping to a lower drought response level.
As school holidays end and students head back to school, let’s all remember to stay waterwise and to share our water-saving tips with friends both old and new.
