Removal of tree in KAVHA to prevent further damage

06 December 2024

To support the ongoing protection of Kingston’s buildings and heritage, the Department needs to remove a single pine tree which is causing damage to the greenkeeper’s shed at the golf course.

A project to repair and upgrade the greenkeeper’s shed is about to commence, which will include a four-metre extension for additional storage of equipment used for maintenance and upkeep of the golf course.

These works are important not only for golfers, but for the broader community who use the area for recreation and the Norfolk Island economy, given its attraction for visitors.

The tree has grown significantly and the roots are now encroaching on the existing shed, causing damage. Removing this single tree will also allow for future potential road works in the area once the shed upgrades have been completed. This will alleviate some of the traffic pressure on the historically significant Number 4 Quality Row, with existing damage to the convict-built kerb from coaches and other large vehicles.

The department recognises the importance of preserving and protecting Norfolk Island’s trees for future generations, and will only support the removal of trees which present a safety risk or a negative impact to the heritage values of the site.

Native Norfolk plants will also be planted at the site to offset the removal of the Norfolk pine.
