Speak Norfolk Today - an Encyclopaedia of the Norfolk Island Language

Books

Product Description

Norfolk, the language described in this encyclopaedia, has a unique history. Deriving from the speech of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives and companions, who settled Pitcairn Island in 1790, it was brought to Norfolk Island by the Pitcairn Islanders when they relocated in 1856.

Since that time it has continued to be spoken in both its Pitcairn and Norfolk forms by the descendants of that original community.

This book provides the general reader with an accurate way of writing the language as it is spoken, a description of the basic grammatical structures and common phrases, and an extensive dictionary of Norfolk to English.
